Facts about Indonesia

Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world (more than 170 million of its 220 million inhabitants), but freedom of religion is recognized and guaranteed by the Indonesian government through its constitution. While the majority of the people are Muslims, their congenial relationship with different minority religions (Christian - both Protestant and Roman Catholic, Buddhism, and Hinduism) is harmoniously maintained. However, religious fanaticism continues to cause tension between followers of different faiths. A lot of Christians suffer persecution (like the burning of churches, difficulty in finding a job, and freedom to construct a new church building). Despite this, the Christian faith is growing in Indonesia. In 1900, only 1 percent of the population (400,000) of 40 million was Christian. After a century, Christians account for 20 percent (44 million) of Indonesia’s 220 million people.

Located off the Northwest coast of Australia and between the mainland southeast coast of Asia. Officially Republic of Indonesia.
